THURAH, LAURIDS de. – [A MONUMENT OF BAROQUE ARCHITECTURE] Den Danske Vitruvius / Le Vitruve Danois / Der Dänische Vitruvius.
Copenhagen, Ernst Henrich Berlings, 1746-1749. 2 volumes.
In 1735 the King of Denmark Christian VI (1699-1746) commissioned the most prestigious Danish architect, Lauritz de Turah (1706-1759), to produce this work, which was to describe and illustrate the most important monuments and buildings in Denmark at the time. Turah was inspired in the “Vitruvius Britanicus”, by Colen Campbell, and after ten years of work he produced what is undoubtedly the most important work in the field of Danish architecture of all times, which he dedicated to the son King Christian, his successor, Frederick V.
The first volume contains the plans and elevations of the main public and private buildings in Copenhagen, mainly Christianborg, as well as churches and private houses. The second shows the castles of the Renaissance and those of Schleswig-Holstein and Oldenburg.
Text in Danish, French and German. Numerous magnificent engravings by J. H. Thiele, and the German engravers, Michael Keyl and C. L. Wüste.
Fine condition.
